Sachin and an Elixir of Life

India lost to Pakistan at Bangalore and the test series was levelled 1-1 by Pakistan. India would have managed a draw had they played 6 more overs(not had they scored 100 more runs, mind u- time and overs were the key). Sachin scored 16 off 98 deliveries, the second highest in that innings in terms of balls faced. Ganguly, Laxman, Sehwag and even The Wall couldn't come close to facing so many balls. My point is, given the situation, i was furious to note a couple of my friends put the blame on Tendulkar's slow batting, for the defeat. On retrospect, i think i am awed by the talent of these guys who manage to find some crooked angle to the whole drama by which Sachin can be crucified. For die-hard Sachin fans, it's always better to ignore such people.
I read about this pill, which increases the life span of an individual by 30 years. If I have a choice, I'd give it to Sachin, just to dwell in the delight of seeing him bat for 30 more years!...and then there are these critics who blindfold themselves everytime Sachin walks into a cricket field...

Ram, wanted to comment...but on second thoughts refrained from doing so because its not going to lead us anywhere other than probably a very long debate without any conclusion.

k7- full last day's play paathenaa, go ahead and comment...i'd be glad to reply. Match reports padichittu comment panna porennaa, dont.

Ram, possibly u might not even see this, here goes..i spose im allowed to comment as i did see each and every agonising delivery of the last days play...and even more so of SRT's innings.Frankly i dont take pleasure in bashing sachin...if at all thats ur grouse. He simply didnt have the fire in terms of getting on tp of the bowlers da..and u wont realize how sad it was unless u watch it...how else would u account for a bat of his stature to be cowed down with 5 fielders around the bat with 2 silly points, a slip, a short leg and leg gully for a spinner? and its not about bat and ball alone da...hes given up the mind game part of it.as for him having played the greatest no of deliveries ...ha ha,Ram...u save matches by scoring...nobody saves a match by ducking 540 odd deliveries.

PS: after i reflected thse things to k7 too the other day..an then this happened yest...

Sudh- naanum full match paathaen and I can agree to an extent that playing defensive was "a" reason...what bothers me is the fact that Sachin's name comes first when people(the two i was talking about in my post) start bashing...y not Ganguly or Laxman or even Dravid for that matter? All I can conclude from this is that people EXPECT MIRACLES from Sachin and Sachin only everytime he gets to bat, cos when he and Dravid do the same things(maybe Sachin does it a lil better), only Sachin is bashed and The Wall becomes Poor Chap!
Sachin can defend a 1000 balls if needbe, but what i think happened that day was, he did not realize that some of the lesser mortals cannot even defend 10 balls with so many close-in fielders and that's the only reason to criticize Sachin for that day's mishaps(in simple words, he was expected to play not just for his country but also for his teammates, which u can ask only of Sachin!).
Yet, as a Sachin fan, i could not help but adore the manner in which his "almost" flawless defense showed in that game and of all the match reports of that day's play, it's a lil baffling to see that u chose Mia's !!!

u dont EXPECT MIRACLES !! They happen like the Lax' 281 or Wag's 309....unless you're saying that expecting SRT to bat *normally* is in itself a MIRACLE!
Besides who can expect any such from SRT now ??? [:P] ..and flawless defense or not Wag has been able to do more in such a short time ..and in that he not only beats SRT but all of the other guys too...
and finally..im sure we're gonna endup going in circles....lets see...btw one more ..think u might have seen it too...

just his POV i guess...

Ram-one question da...you obviously consider Sachin to be the greatest player today in cricket, maybe of all time too..so what is wrong in expecting him to bat just another 6 overs? Batting 6 overs on a not so bad pitch does not need a miracle at all.

This will be my last comment here..don't see the discussion going anywhere at all.

sudh- u r divulging from the point. the point is that Sachin was not "the" reason for this loss and the question is "not" whether we would have won had Sehwag been not out...NO. I can very much visualize what kesavan's and ur reaction wud have been(infact read K7's last comment and u'll know what i mean) had Sachin tried to attack and gotten out of an inside edge or caught behind...it wud have been "reckless shot", "vulnerable to off-cutter", "can't attack", "IRRESPONSIBLE". You wont say that when Sehwag gets out in single digit after playing a rash shot- NO! cos u know that's his best capability- his instincts to attack. Nobody would want Sehwag to get a 100 off 200 balls to retain his place in the side if he's running woefully out of form..that's not what ppl WANT to see.
To me, What is great about Sachin is that even when the batting solely depended on his shoulders, he never went on the defensive(the days that u ppl think WERE his heydays- to me, it's perennial) and still managed to win matches on his own on a lot of occasions...India used to lose when Sachin got centuries...why? cos he was not a match winner? NO! It was cos the sum of all other players' scores used to be less than hundred and the Extras were the second highest score in the scorecard. Sehwag doesn't have any such problems! NO- am not undermining his talent and efforts, he is certainly very good- but unfortunately, he has the luxury of playing in a team that boasts of Sachin, Dravid, Laxman, et al. Mark my words...come back to this blog and laugh at me if Sehwag manages to win matches single-handedly everytime he walks into bat for us after Sachin n Dravid retire! I'll stop watching cricket! I swear.
Let's get this straight again. The only point i tried to make thru this post was that Sachin was not the number 1 reason for India's loss to Pakistan...infact he doesn't come even under the top 5 reasons for the defeat.

K7- yes, it was a certain letdown, but the point as i try to say again and again is that, it wasn't the primary letdown for India that day. U'll understand had u watched the day's play.

Ram, I don't think either Sudh or I ever put the blame only on Sachin.

Sachin just reaffirmed what I have been thinking of him all along.

Ram said...

K7- missing my point again...the blame wasn't put on Sachin ONLY, but it was put on Sachin and the others. One msg from Sudh to u the moment India lost confirms what i say and i am sure Sudh wont disagree..here it is...

sudhar_v: f*** sachin and the batters

it's not f the batters but f sachin and the batters. This clearly shows that Sachin was held as the prime accused by Sudh...and dont worry, the second person i was talking about isnt u...it's a friend here with whom i happened to watch the match with.

Anonymous said...

....that F sachin coz he was the guy out in the middle when i said that!!!..and am not saying we lost *this* match cos of sachin...infact it started long back at mohali iself [:P]...

Ram said...

sudh- u said that after the match got over- that's what the transcript u sent me say...but since u now admit he wasnt the prime reason to lose in B'lore, i guess we can stop here.
